The Future of Film with Jason Berman '02, President, Mandalay Pictures


Wednesday, February 24, 2021 - 7:00 PM EST POSTPONED to Wednesday, March 10 - 7:00 PM EST - Jason Berman '02, President of Mandalay Pictures, will join Director of Alumni Relations & Engagement, Christine Pappas '01, for the evening to discuss his recent projects including Nine Days, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, what working in the film industry was like at the peak of the pandemic, and the industry's future.

Berman has produced feature films that have debuted at premiere film festivals around the globe, including the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, SXSW, Tribeca, Berlinale, and Edinburgh. 

Berman's recent productions include: Edson Oda’s Sundance award winning film Nine Days starring Winston Duke, Zazie Beetz, Bill Skarsgård, and Benedict Wong; Anthony Mandler’s Surrounded starring Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell and Michael K. Williams; Olivier Megaton’s The Last Days of American Crime starring Edgar Ramirez; Prentice Penny’s Uncorked, Cindy Chupack’s Otherhood, Clark Johnson’s Juanita, Jonathan Helpert's IO, Gerard McMurray's Burning Sands, Ryan Koo's Amateur, Eli Craig's Little Evil, and Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation.

Berman was named in the 2016 Variety Dealmakers Impact Report, in Variety in 2011 as one of the Top Ten Producers to Watch, and by Deadline Hollywood in 2012 as one of the Top Ten Producers to Watch at Sundance.

Prior to producing, Berman worked at the William Morris Agency, MGM Studios, and for writer/director Gary Ross. Berman is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and the Producers Guild of America. He is a 2006 graduate of the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts, where he is now an adjunct professor. Berman helped to develop and start the Catalyst program at the Sundance Institute.

Virtual Oyster Tasting with Dylan's Oyster Cellar

SNOW DATE: Sunday, February 28, 5:00 pm EST on ZOOM
Join the Alumni Association Board for a Virtual Oyster Tasting with Dylan's Oyster Cellar.
Co-owners Irene Donnelly Salmon '02 and Dylan Salmon will talk guests through three different oyster farming regions and provide tasting notes for each example oyster. They will also taste and discuss their coddie - a regional classic, and give guests a mixology demo of their famous Surfer Rosa cocktail! The floor will be open for guest questions and comments at times during the event.

Access to the 45-minute event
Half dozen oysters from three different regions
Cocktail sauce/mignonette
House specialty starter, the Coddie
Surfer Rosa Specialty Cocktail (optional)

Alumni Weekend 2021

We look forward to celebrating with the classes ending in 0, 1, 5, and 6. Virtual events and experiences are being planned for the weekend 
Thursday, April 29 - through Saturday, May 1, which will include:

o Virtual Campus Tour - a fun video led by Director of Alumni Relations & Engagement, Christine Pappas '01, with special guest appearances

o Virtual “Collection” - a video message from Head of School, Matt Micciche

o Virtual Meeting for Worship - Yes, it can be done online! The School has held several of these over the past year with great success. People find it very centering and a great time for sharing. This will most likely be held on Friday afternoon.

o Virtual Alumni Awards Ceremonies and Receptions – Where the Distinguished Alumni Award, Outstanding Alumni Service Award, and Honorary Alumni Award are presented. There will be one for the Classes of 0 and 5 recipients on Thursday night, and one for the Classes of 1 and 6 recipients on Friday night. o Inter-Class Trivia hosted by CharmCity Trivia on Saturday night at 6:00 PM, which will be held Saturday night before we have our class party.

o Class Parties – Virtual or In-Person, following the trivia game, to be planned by each class

The Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony and Reception will be held in the fall to spread out the celebratory events and to avoid virtual event fatigue. At this time we anticipate that it may also be virtual even in the fall.

Portia Wood, Esq '02, Partner at Wood Legal Group, LLP, named Top 40 under 40 by the National Black Lawyers Association for the past four years, will discuss important elements of estate planning and financial strategy. Portia's firm specializes in comprehensive estate planning, child guardianship planning, trust administration, and probate litigation. Her passion is working with young families. This session is for all ages - "Everyone over the age of 18 needs an estate plan but you don't need the same estate plan," Portia says.
