Hosted by the Friends School Alumni Association Board

Join the Friends School Alumni Association on February 18 at 6:00pm to chat with alumni about their careers and steps they took to get there. You will have the chance to discuss networking opportunities and career advice with FSB alumni from different industries and ask them about their experience and thought process behind their college and career choices.

The FSB Alumni Association invites both alumni and Upper School students to join them for this event in the James L. Zamoiski ’68 Alumni Center (ZAC).

Carolyn Barker-Villena ’95
Current Company: Covenant House International
Current Job Title: Senior Vice President, Latin America
Education: University of Texas at Austin (Master of Public Affairs & Master of Arts, Public Policy and Latin American Studies), Vassar College (BA, Environmental Studies)

Carolyn, Friends School Class of 1995, joined Covenant House International in April 2023 as Senior Vice President for Latin America where she oversees programming for vulnerable youth in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. Previously, she worked for Lutheran World Relief for 14 years, including 10 years as Senior Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. Carolyn led the organization's strategic direction and programming in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru, and Haiti. Her regional portfolio included economic development, climate change adaptation, gender and youth empowerment, agri-enterprise development, and emergency response.

Carolyn has a dual master's in Latin America Studies and Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Vassar College. Carolyn is fluent in Spanish and French and has lived and traveled throughout Latin America. She currently lives in Baltimore, MD with her Peruvian husband, her FSB 9th grader (Carmen Villena), and their chunky dog, Nala.

Alicia Freeman ’96
Current Company: Baltimore County Public Schools
Current Job Title: ELD Teacher (English Language Development Teacher)
Education: College of Notre Dame of Maryland (Master of Arts, TESOL), Barnard College (BA, Women's Studies and Visual Arts)

Alicia was the recipient of the Baltimore County Teacher of the Year Award in 2022-23 and is primarily an ELD Teacher (English Language Development Teacher) teacher at Reisterstown Elementary School in Reisterstown and Lansdowne Elementary School in Lansdowne. In addition to working with young learners, Alicia is a resource for their parents, running workshops to introduce them to the U.S. school system and helping them access resources, including adult ESOL classes.

Alicia realized her life’s passion for teaching English to children when as a child she experienced her Portuguese grandmother struggling to help her with her schoolwork. “I am proud to work with immigrant students and families,” Freeman said. “In them, I see my grandmother, ashamed of her lack of access to education, and my grandfather, a janitor in a public school. I am proud to be their granddaughter, helping to cultivate this next diverse generation of new Americans.”

After graduating from Friends, Alicia received her undergraduate degree from Barnard College, Columbia University in New York and her master’s degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Education. Before joining the Baltimore County Public School system, she taught ESOL in the Baltimore City Public School system and served as Director of Admissions and Development and later Principal at Archbishop Border School, a Catholic dual language school run by the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

In addition to being an alumna, Friends School Class of 1996, Alicia was the 2023 Commencement Key Note Speaker.

Langston Lee ’15
Current Company: Druid Hill Park Partnership
Current Job Title: Social Venture Fellow
Education: Morgan State University (BA, Political Science)

Langston, a 2015 graduate of Friends School of Baltimore, has built a career dedicated to public service and digital innovation. After earning his degree in Political Science from Morgan State University in 2020, Langston committed himself to efforts aimed at mainstreaming legislation in the digital landscape. During the 2024 election cycle, Langston served as a Digital Engagement Organizer for the New Hampshire Democratic Coordinated Campaign, where he led digital outreach in the North Country region of this crucial battleground state. His work focused on electing Democrats at all levels, from the gubernatorial and U.S. congressional races to the executive council and state legislature. His public service journey includes four years as a Constituent Services Representative for U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, managing specialized casework involving IRS, active military, unemployment, and consumer protection issues. Langston's commitment to innovation and social equity is further exemplified by his role as a Social Venture Fellow with the Druid Hill Park Partnership and his internship with the Applied Social Media Lab at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. In these roles, he contributed to community development initiatives and projects exploring public interest-centered social media technology. Operating at the intersection of media and public policy, Langston is passionate about mainstreaming legislation in the digital landscape. He seeks to empower those often left out of the conversation and build upon his foundational public service career to address emerging civic challenges related to internet and artificial intelligence applications.

Holden Marshall ’15
Current Company: Merrill Lynch Wealth Management
Current Job Title: Financial Advisor
Education: St. Mary’s College of Maryland (BA, Economics and Public Policy)

Holden is a lifelong Friends School student, having attended from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. He was a four-year starter at shortstop on the varsity baseball team. After graduating in 2015, Holden went on to play baseball at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he earned a double major in Economics and Public Policy in 2019. He now lives in Baltimore and is a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch. In his free time, Holden enjoys golfing, rock climbing, and spending time with family in the Baltimore area.

Alison (Bomgardner) Miller ’95
Current Company: Miller Psychology Group
Current Job Title: Psychologist & Owner
Education: Emory University (BA, Psychology), The Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology at Widener University (Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology)

Alison attended Friends School from 1st through 12th grade and is proud to have her two children (classes of 2028 and 2032) currently at FSB! She resides with her husband and kids in Pikesville. Alison attended Emory University for undergrad and completed her doctorate in psychology at Widener University. Alison is a licensed psychologist and owns Miller Psychology Group in Lutherville. She and her team specialize in treating anxiety disorders across the lifespan, with particular focus on childhood concerns such as school anxiety, AD/HD, and selective mutism. Perinatal mental health is an additional focus of Alison's work. She enjoys dividing her time between clinical work, professional speaking, and entrepreneurship.

Alison spent time in a variety of professional settings over the course of her career, including: community mental health; dual-diagnosis rehabilitation; elementary schools performing the duties of a school psychologist; college counseling; and multiple private practices.

Emily Pelton ’93
Current Company: Doulas of Baltimore
Current Job Title: Founder and Managing Director
Education: University of Maryland College Park (BA, Political Science)

Emily Pelton, founder and Managing Director of Doulas of Baltimore, continues her legacy through mentoring the next generation of doulas as well as cultivating and maintaining professional relationships within the Baltimore birth and small business communities. She has supported growing Baltimore families for nearly two decades through hospital and private childbirth education and as an in-demand solo doula, eventually transitioning into a partnership, then leading an agency of doulas. In addition to operating her own business since 2002, Emily is also responsible for having trained hundreds of new birth and postpartum doulas from 2014 to 2017, both across the country and internationally. Emily’s calm, confident presence combined with her vast experience make her Baltimore’s leading expert in pregnancy, birth, and parenting. Emily graduated from Friends School with the Class of 1993.

Hilary (Baldwin) Ruley ’95
Current Company: Baltimore City Law Department
Current Job Title: Chief Solicitor
Education: University of Notre Dame (BS and JD)

Hilary attended friends for 15 years, graduating in 1995. She received her Bachelor of Science and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. She now practices law in Maryland. Her daughter, Hannah, attends Friends Upper School.

Sophia Springer ’13
Current Company: Friends School of Baltimore
Current Job Title: Director of Alumni & Parent Engagement
Education: Franklin University Switzerland (BA, International Management)

Sophia joined Friends School of Baltimore as the Director of Alumni & Parent Engagement in 2023. She attended Friends for Upper School and graduated in 2013. She then went on to attend Franklin University Switzerland for four years where she studied International Management and Applied Mathematics. Before finding her way back to Friends, she worked in the Wine & Spirits industry. After college, she moved to Chicago to work for Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., a global auction house and retailer where she managed marketing activities. She then went on to work at Sotheby’s in New York City, first overseeing a Napa-based charity wine auction series and then becoming an Assistant Buyer for their New York retail wine business. She is currently studying to receive her Diploma in Wine from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.
